The role of “why” in epidemiology!!
Mar 7th, 2013 by Asif Patel
Why is the “cornerstone” of epidemiology, that is my inputs from my rookie experience in Epi so far.
!) Why this design?
2) Why parametric, why not non-parametric?
3) Why Fisher exact, why not person’s chi square?
4) Why not logistic regression?
case control, nested case control ,cohort, retrospective cohort studies, randomized..double blind randomized… Which study suit for this study, and WHY?
Physician + Math Background + Passion + curosity to know “why” = ????

Epidemiology was one of my favorite classes. I took it with Professor Oppenheimer at Brooklyn College. He was a great teacher, and looking back, probably a big factor in why I decided to peruse a PhD. Think I actually read the textbook cover to cover!
Thanks for sharing your experience Suz. Great professor inspires and worst instructors are destructors. I had both experiences. Here I will talk only good one. I am fortunate enough that I had Dr.Tsui as my professor during my MPH. She is my inspiration what prompted me to give a thought for research.
I would love to meet Dr.Oppenheimer.
